Figure 1: Screen shot of Minitab

    Start up the Minitab program
  2. Close the first alert window by clicking on the close button
  3. The following screen will be visible, this is Minitab’s worksheet and session space.

    • A worksheet is where you enter the dataset.
    • The session space is the output of the analysis.

The First Variable

Figure 2: Entering the First Variable

Enter the name of the first variable in the worksheet cell below C1.
  2. Enter the first number in the data set for the first variable below the variable name.
  3. Continue entering the rest of the dataset for the variable in column C1. (See Figure 2)
  4. After entering data for this variable, follow the same steps for additional variables in adjacent columns.

    • If you accidentally delete any numbers click Edit which is located on the top of the program and select Undo.

Alternative to entering the first variable: Copy & Paste

  1. If data is saved in an Excel spreadsheet, copy and paste it to Minitab.
  2. Highlight the dataset saved in Excel.
  3. Right click the mouse and select copy.
  4. Go to Minitab and click the first cell below C1.
  5. Right click the mouse and select paste cells.

Run Descriptive Statistics

Descriptive statistics summarizes a set of data using several important values.

  • Mean - Arithmetic average value of the data in the column
  • Standard deviation - Measure of dispersion of data
  • Median - The middle value of a set
  • Minimum - The smallest number in a set
  • Maximum - The largest number in a set

  1. Enter the dataset following previously stated instructions.
  2. After entering the dataset, click on Stat (in the Toolbar) which is listed on the top of the program.
  3. Click on Basic Statistics in the pull-down menu.
  4. Select Display Descriptive Statistics, then the Display Descriptive Statistics menu will appear.
  5. Double-click on the variable used for analysis, then the variable will appear in the box below the sign “variables? (see Figure 3)
Figure 3: Display Descriptive Statistics Window

Click on the Statistics button and a list will appear showing options of different analysis.

Conduct a Histogram

Histograms graph frequencies with respect to categories.

  1. Click on Graph which is located on the top of Minitab program (see the Toolbar)
  2. Select Histogram from the pull-down menu.
    Figure 6: Histograms Window

After the Histograms window appears, select the type of histogram desired (See Figure 6) and click OK.

How to run a Regression Analysis

Regression analysis models relations between random variables.

    Figure 9: All Variables

  2. There are two types of variables in regression analysis: response and predictor variables (define?)
  3. Y usually represents the response variable and X’s usually represent predictor variable(s)
  4. Enter response and predictor variables individually in separate columns. (see Figure 9)

    • Response Variable: We you measure in an experiment. It is also called dependent variable.
    • Predictor Variables: The variables whose values determine the change of other variables. They are also called independent variables.

  1. Step Two: Conducting the Analysis

      Figure 10: Regression Window

Open the Stat pull-down menu from the tool bar, and select regression.
    2. Select regression again.
    3. In the regression window click on the box next to “Response.
    4. Double-click Y. If you clicked on the wrong variable all you need to do is ignore the incorrect one and do the analysis again.
    5. Click on the box next to “Predictors.?
    6. Double-click on all predictor variables.
    7. Click OK.

  1. Step Three: Interpretation of the Regression Output

Figure 11: Output of the Regression Analysis

Output from the regression analysis appears in the Session window of Minitab (see Figure 10).

    1. Regression equation gives an approximation of how X’s predict Y.
    2. P-values determine the significance of the predictor variables.
    3. R-sq describes how well the data fits the model (1 and -1 indicate perfect fit)

Example: Assume that during a three-hour period spent outside, a person recorded the outside temperature, the time spent mowing the grass, and their water consumption.
Use Minitab to find the standardized regression equation for the amount of water consumed based on the temperature and the time spent mowing. You will still have to input some of the formulas to standardize the coefficients when using Minitab.

Preliminaries: Entering the data.

  • Enter the Water data in column 1, Temperature data in column 2, and Mowing Time in column 3. Put the category names in the title row.
  • If you need help entering the data, see the Introduction to Minitab tutorial.
Procedure for finding the Standardized Regression Equation
It might help to print this out while working through the example using Minitab.

  1. In the C4 title row, type 'new water', click Calc>Standardize

    • Mark the button Subtract mean and divide by the standard deviation
    • In the input column, select water and store results in new water.
    • Click OK.

  • In the C5 title row, type in 'Water Transform', click Calc>Calculator

    • In the Store result in variable box, select water transform.
    • Under the expression box, type in (1/sqrt(6))* 'new water'
    • Click OK. (your values should be like the ones below)

  • In C6 title row, type 'new temp', click Calc>Standardize

    • Mark the button Subtract mean and divide by the standard deviation.
    • In the input column, select temperature and store results in new temp.
    • Click OK.

  • in the C7 title row, type 'temp transform', click Calc>Calculator

    • In the Store result in variable box, select temp transform.
    • Under the expression box, type in (1/sqrt(6))* 'new temp'
    • Click OK.

  • Do the same steps for the new mowing and transform mowing.

  • Now that we you have transformed the variables, click Stat>Regression>Regression

    • In the Response box, select water transform.
    • In the Predictor(s) box, select temp. transform and mowing transform .
    • Click OK.
